History and Culture of Palo Alto
In ancient times all of California and the surrounding areas were inhabited by the Ohlone Native Americans. Compared to its neighboring regions Palo Alto had fewer number of Ohlone Native Americans occupying the area when finally Spanish colonizing forces reached Palo Alto and the nearby region in 1769. However, this area was not much in use by the colonizers till 1827.
After the Spanish and Mexican separation in 1822 and from around 1827 many independent Spanish and Mexicans came to this region and started to buy land to built their ranches, farms and estates. During this period many of such ranchers and farmers came and established many ranches. Among some of the ranches and farms Rancho Corte de Madera, Rancho Rinconada del Arroyo de San Francisquito, Rancho Cañada de Raymundo, Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas, Robles Rancho, Ayrshire Farm, Palo Alto Stock Farm and so on occupied most of the lands. All of these ranches and farms gradually became more segmented and now forms the most part of present day Palo Alto.
Many of the historical names of roads, avenues, parks and buildings across Palo Alto still bear the the heritage of these Spanish legacies. But gradually property ownerships began to be handed over to some wealthy Americans like Elisha Oscar Crosby, Peter Coutts, Leland Stanford and some others as they started to buy lands in the area during 1875-76.
In 1855 the township of Mayfield was formed in the present day South Palo Alto region. In 1886 Leland Stanford came to Mayfield with a view to founding the Stanford University in memory of his son, who died of typhoid at a young age. He had a train stop created on Mayfield’s Lincoln Street, now California Avenue, and proposed further development of the town along with establishing the new University. However, he put forward a condition for the people that there will be no more alcohol in the town. But the people there were very fond of alcohol and refused Stanford’s proposal, hence, he had to move a bit north and start working on the founding of the town of Palo Alto. He along with his friend Timothy Hopkins started to buy vast amount of lands in 1887 for the new town. Which was finally formed as a Temperance Town in 1894. And Stanford established The Stanford University and a Train Stop on University Avenue in his new town.
With time along the lines of unbending efforts from Stanford, Palo Alto continued to grow and surpassed the abutting Mayfield in size and progress. Finally on July 2, 1925 Palo Alto voters approved the annexation of Mayfield and the two towns merged into one community on July 6, 1925.
Now, Palo Alto is one of the most expensive cities of the country and the inhabitants are the most educated in the nation. Many of today’s technology companies are now running their operations from Palo Alto. Hewlett-Packard, VMware, Loral, Tesla Motors, Skype, IDEO and so on would be to name a few. Besides, many of our groundbreaking tech pioneers, like Facebook, Google, Pinterest, PayPal, Intuit, Logitech, had their roots here in Palo Alto.

According to the US census data 2010 Palo Alto had a population of 64,403 among which 28.0% are aged between 45 to 64 and 17.1% are 65 years of age or older. Among the population most of them are Whites, Asian, Hispanic or Latinos. The population from other races are very fewer in number. However with time the racial diversity in Palo Alto is expected to increase.
Between 1990 and 2000 the senior population of Palo Alto has increased significantly from 17.5% to 22%. And in 2010 we can see that it had dramatically increased to 28%. So, the growth in the senior population of Palo Alto is starkly visible. It is mostly because of the phenomenon called the Graying of America, where the generation termed as the Baby Boomers are gradually reaching their declining age.
